IEA Coal Quality Workshop

Anthony Williams, Manager of Utilisation Technology at A&B Mylec presented a paper at the IEA’s Coal Quality Workshop in New Delhi on the 10 November 2016. The workshop was co-hosted by the IEA Clean Coal Centre and the Coal Preparation Society of India (CPSI). The event was held between the 9-10 November at the Habitat Centre, New Delhi, India. The workshop aimed to gather both world and local experts to gain a better understanding of the technical challenges faced by power station operators and industrial end users facing increasingly stringent demands for pollution control (such as SOx, NOx, PM2.5, and mercury) in an effort to enhance the prospects of cleaner air in India.

The paper was co-authored with Oliver Scholes, Technical Marketing Manager, Vale and evaluates the performance of Moatize thermal coal in binary and ternary blends in an Indian power plant. See below for an abstract of the presentation, and contact Anthony using his details below.

Effect of blending on operational performance and generation costs of an Indian power plant.

Coal blending is performed for a variety of reasons including reducing fuel costs, ensuring regulatory limits are satisfied, managing operational problems and managing the risk of maintaining stable fuel supplies through diversification of supply. Many power plants have the capability to blend coals before storage in mill coal bunkers otherwise other power plants have the capability to fill alternate bunkers with different coals and thus the coals are blended within the boiler. Many Indian power plants, especially those positioned close to ports, can take advantage of blending domestic and imported coals and optimising their operations.

This study utilised MarketMastor™ to evaluate the use of a Mozambique coal, Moatize thermal export coal in binary and ternary blends with domestic Indian coals, Australian coals, Indonesian coals and South African coals into an Indian power plant. MarketMastor™ is a software tool used to evaluate a wide range of coal marketing related data. The work initially discussed the procedure followed for the research and the value-in-use power plant model used. The operational performance and generation costs are determined and evaluated for the best possible blends.
