The coal technology hub primarily completes coal quality assessments and tasks associated with detailed studies of the in situ (raw), washability and product coal quality characteristics of both metallurgical and thermal coal deposits . There are a number of key tasks applicable for achieving a robust coal quality evaluation, being the following;

  • Modelling of in situ (raw) coal quality; including the generation of models for in situ moisture and in situ density
  • Database unification; ensuring that the washability data set for the resource aligns to the planned or actual Coal Preparation Plant (CPP)
  • CPP simulation and yield / quality estimation
  • Product characterisation and specification generation
  • Blending studies for quality and yield optimisation – Development of Whole of resource Optimisation Models (WOROMs)

The coal technology hub routinely acts as the owners representative for the provision of coal quality advice, to assist with their project. The hub is also responsible for the provision of contract site production quality engineers, from time to time, to meet specific site requirements. Another key service that is provided is the completion of due diligence assessments from a coal quality perspective, to either the resource owner or a potential investor.
